I am getting ready to purchase a roller furler for my OD 25. I will probably buy either a CDI FF4 or a Schaefer SnapFurl. I know both of these are very similar and both would work fine on my boat but if one is a little better than the other I would like to know. The SnapFurl is about $150 cheaper. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Paul Palmer

There 2 Very Good Systems

As you know Paul Practical Sailor rated them almost dead even, with a slight nod to Schaeffer as a "Best Buy", in other words a few bucks cheaper, generally. I think you will find more applications of the CDI because they were first off the mark with plastic foils. Harken came next but with some initial problems with their foil. Then Schaeffer. I like my Snapfurl, and I know Justin and others like their CDI. Both companies have a great product with great support. If money is a big concern, make your decision accordingly. But I think you will be happy with either. By the way, does the CDI quote include the SS ball bearing kit? Don

Like Don says . . .

Paul - I have a CDI and dig it, but I know people who like the snapfurl every bit as much. I'd buy my CDI again, but there is no reason I wouldn't buy the Schaefer. Go with the one the loft you like is selling - its always good to have friends around. Justin- O'day Owners' Web

Just An Update on Schaefer

Just picked up my Snapfurl, as I was having my forestay replaced and in talking with my loft guy, he mentioned that the success of the polymer foils is so good that Schaefer is designing a new line of furlers with the plastic foils for boats up to the mid 30's in length. Schaefer has also bought the tuff-luff line of racing furling foils. He was saying that all the "Around the World" ULDB sleds use the tuff-luff foil, and it has stood the test of time. Don
