I'm a novice sailor so bear with me here. I've been enjoying our new boat but ran into some trouble with our roller furler this weekend. When bringing in the genoa the furler became bound up. I ended up dropping the genoa and putting it down below. I then managed to get the furler unjammed. My question is how do I re roll my Genoa. Does the drum get turned clockwise or counter clockwise. It's a Harken roller furler and the furling line runs down the port side. Thanks.

If your genoa has a U.V. cover on it, then you should be able to deduce the rotation.

Just s g is right look at the sail....Then the next time keep tension on the furling line so you don't jam it again.

Good luck.

When the furling line is fully out (less 5 turns inside the drum), the sail is furl in. When the line is fully in the sail is out.

The drum can turn clockwise or counter clockwise. Usually clockwise to furl in.

If you want the sail to furl in "nicely" without a candy cane look, i.e. expose the white part, just move the fairlead further back.

To work well the halyard must have enough tension or be restrained so it does not wrap around the headtstay

The furling lead tension needs to be controlled when letting out the sail so it wraps around the drum without fouling

My sail furls best on starboard tack somewhat down wind to minimize the load on the sail BUT still allow a tight furl

Just remember that when you took the sail off the furler the drum was nearly empty of line (as alex mentioned, up to 5 wraps), which is how it should be set when you re-deploy your jib. Hopefully there is a turn or two still left on the drum to indicate which direction your furler spins to take up sail.
Failing that look for the sometimes colored sun protection (red, blue, white) UV sail protection strip along the leech of your jib/genoa. You will deduce the direction of rotation on the drum/spool as the UV protection needs to face the weather.

I am curious as to how the this became bound up in the first place as there could be many issues or just one that caused this incident. Can you provide more information so we can help so this incident does not happen again.

We worked it out this morning! It's amazing how much better you can think when you don't have anything distracting you like other boats, etc. and a bunch of time with a beautiful view.

I think the roller became jammed when there wasn't any pressure on the jib sheet as I was furling it in as fast as I could. Thanks for the info everyone.
