Anyone have this problem? Pulled really hard on sheets and genny would not unfurl.
Rigger up mast and said looked like "inner" bearing not rotating. Emailed Schaefer on this
model 2100 on my 2003 C310 and they thought "inner denrail?" worn and needed
replacement. Not halyard wrap and bottom drum rotates with no problem. Appreciate
any thoughts including how to replace part.

Both the rigger and the manufacturer seem to agree that the upper swivel likely needs replacing. Not familiar with the Schaeffer System but the usual method of replacing would be for the rigger to bring down the forestay and furler assembly and proceed to disassemble it including the extrusions so that the whole unit could be re-assembled together with the replacement upper swivel following the manufacturer's original installation instructions. Would be a good opportunity to inspect the forestay.

You can get the manual on our blog. https://svsmitty.files.wordpress.com

Look on the page "the boat". You can do the replacement with the mast up. You need to use the two jib halyards to support the mast while you do it. The manual has good instructions on how to disassemble the lower unit to get the top swivel off.

While you are at it, look at the lower unit. If you don't have the flush hole you should upgrade the lower unit while you are at it.

Good luck

Just make sure you aren't having halyard wrap. That is one of the biggest problems with upper swivel failure. The fix is a halyard retainer. Harken sells them separately. Two come included with every Furlex system. Schaefer has them as an option. It is installed on the mast so that the halyard exits from the masthead and feeds through the restrainer (or retainer) so that it creates the optimum angle for the halyard to feed to the upper swivel. This eliminates halyard wrap which is when the halyard wraps around the forestay and hence binding it all up. My guess is that is really what is happening and so take some binoculars and take a close look before buying a new upper swivel.

Clyde,
Had to remove my forestay this week and had the upper fuller assembly in hand. The inner bearing is just a teflon sleeve. Not much you can do with it. I would drop the sail and hit it hard with fresh water. I use mclube or dry film lube on the outer roller bearings. Just clean the inner as best you can. The only way to remove the upper swivel is to disassemble the forestay. Hope this helps some.
