Roller Furler questions

One last step to go to fully operational. Had a great time on my first sail, even though I used just the main sail. My old DS did not have a roller furler and I have never used one, so just a few questions. Unlike a regular jib (that I used to have to clip to the forestay), I am assuming that this just hooks on the bottom (the roller itself), attatch the genoa to the top of the roller, and then just hoist up the sail into place. Is this correct (that nothing is attached to the forestay)? Once up, do I just pull it out and will it lock so it stays out, or will it automaticlly roll back in (I am thinking it will stay "locked" out and then I pull on the line that is on the roller (base) and it will roll it self up). As always, any help is great and I thank you for all that you've all done.

all depends on type of furler you have, basic or reefer. the basic has a drum at the bottom, and a 'spinner' attached to the head of the sail and jib hal. sail would need a wire luff installed to work. this is a all or nothing furler. if you have a reefing furler, there is a 'tube' with luff groove that sail slides into and is attached to the furler and 'spinner' as a unit and 'spins' of the forestay and can be 'locked in a reefed position. first time, you have to roll up the sail on what ever body you are using, with a couple extra turns to add few reserve spins after un furled. pull sheet and the jib unwinds while rolling up the furler rope, then pull rope and furler winds up on its self.

Basic I would say

Bruce...I would say I have the basic because there is a drum for the bottom and the sails are wrapped around a wire. Does the "spinner" attach to the fore stay? Thanks for your help!!

the 'spinner' may have 'hooks' that ride up the forestay while being pulled up by the jib hal. you should have a wire luff in the jib. this is a basic all or nothing system, you can lower the jib all rolled up and store that way and 'lock' the furler with a shock cord to keep from unrolling while driving down the road. i have a harken 435 set on my javelin that replaces the forestay on the jav. and 2 of them on a mac 23 cutter.
