I'm thinking about getting a roller furler for my 23 ft Dolphin, what am I looking at price wise? just looking for ballpark prices, how much would a used one cost around?

SailboatData says your Est. Forestay Length.: 26.43' / 8.06m
Looking at the SBO store the FF2 CDI Flexible Headsail Furler comes with ball bearing or with out.
CDI Flexible Furler FF2 with ball bearing option
828622 Available $663.50
CDI Flexible Furler FF2 828621 Available $538.50
I'd be inclined to look at the ball bearing option. I have no knowledge about these furlers.
My boat cam with a Pro Furler. This unit has its fans and not so folks. My rigger told me to use it till it breaks and then get a Harken. One reason is the ability to service the bearings in the Harken. The PRO Furler is a sealed unit.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
Pro Furl is a great unit. I had one on my Catalina 30. It had great company support and they once sent me some parts for free.

I have the CDI Flex Furler now. I wasn't a big fan of them but now that I have it I like it. It works and it isn't so bad for reefing the jib either. It is good if you take your mast down as well.

For smaller boats, the Schaefer Snap Furl series offers greater adjustability because it uses your existing halyard. So you can set luff tension more effectively than the CDI.

I've found a used harken in top shape, just not sure how to install it, I know I have to remove the forestay but I can't figure out how to attach the top bearing

Looks like this may be the unit. Or at least it's cousin. They list the manual in the download section. It uses a wire luff in the sail to wrap around. the unit appears to be hauled up using the jib halyard. The unit in picture 3 is raised using the jib halyard. Have you tried to turn the unit in picture #3. From what I can see it contains the bearings and rotates when the halyard is taught and the jib rolls up on itself.

Look under down loads to get the manual.

Differing thoughts on wire luff furlers.

On one hand, there is the thought that they are good only for furling the sail, and not for reefing the sail.

On the other hand, I know of a few with the opinion that a wire luff furler makes a tighter reef roll, and thus finer entry for the reefed headsail.

In my opinion, the rigid (or semi-rigid, in the case of CDI or Schaeffer Snap-furl) foils of a roller furling system all for consistent twist along the luff of the headsail, and thus provide as good a reefing action as you will find - also a given is that the headsail has foam in the luff to take up excess sail when rolling up the draft.

I think most agree that wire luff furlers aren't good for reefing.

I had limited experience with a wire luff furler on my boat, which originally came with a poorly implemented Schaefer wire luff furler. I found that the sail did not wind up uniformly, which caused the protective strips of Sunbrella material to have gaps. That being said, Harken small boat (wire luff) furlers get very good marks. And Schaefer has an excellent reputation for their Snap-furl foil furlers. (A lot can change in 25 years...)

FRed;

Never got the photo of the newly attached winch. I be glad to discuss the FF2 furler with you as I started using it when it first came out in the 1980'S.

I have used a wire luft furler on a small boat and found that "not for reefing" also means you are likely to have problems trying to furl the sail in high winds. And of course if your trying to gain control in high winds by furling the sail and you cant.. not so good.
