Differing thoughts on wire luff furlers.
On one hand, there is the thought that they are good only for furling the sail, and not for reefing the sail.
On the other hand, I know of a few with the opinion that a wire luff furler makes a tighter reef roll, and thus finer entry for the reefed headsail.
In my opinion, the rigid (or semi-rigid, in the case of CDI or Schaeffer Snap-furl) foils of a roller furling system all for consistent twist along the luff of the headsail, and thus provide as good a reefing action as you will find - also a given is that the headsail has foam in the luff to take up excess sail when rolling up the draft.
I think most agree that wire luff furlers aren't good for reefing.
I had limited experience with a wire luff furler on my boat, which originally came with a poorly implemented Schaefer wire luff furler. I found that the sail did not wind up uniformly, which caused the protective strips of Sunbrella material to have gaps. That being said, Harken small boat (wire luff) furlers get very good marks. And Schaefer has an excellent reputation for their Snap-furl foil furlers. (A lot can change in 25 years...)
