Roller furler/ genoa. What size?

I'm restoring an 1981 H22, my first sailboat. It did not come with a headsail. I'm considering a roller furler unit and getting the largest genoa that will work on this H22. Are sails used with roller furlers made specific for them? Any suggestions where to buy? I've decided on a CDI roller furler but I don't know what sail to get. I'm trying to get the most versatility out of this sail. What's the largest genoa I can use? I'm trying to cover as many wind conditions as possible and hope my thinking is right, but as a new sailor, I'm looking for some experienced advice.Thanks,Pete

Larget sail

It seemes the H22 comes with a 110 and a smaller head sail. I ordered a 155 for mine and just got it last Thrusday. It was light air and I used it Friday afternoon and again Saturday. It worked great. I do not have a roller furler but I do know the Sail will have to have luff tape and Sunbrella on the leach to protect the sail when it is rolled up. Mine is a hank on so I have a different setup. The Foot of my new sail is 14'9". Yes it's big. I ordered from Scott Sails, (found them on EBay). Good price and the Sail looks great. They said 4 weeks for delivery but it took seven. I am still waiting on the spiniker I ordered at the same time, middle of February.

Another question

Steven, Thanks for the info. I have a couple more questions about a roller furler. Since I'm trailering my boat, is a roller furler a problem to set up and then take down? Just thought of that today. Also, if I may ask what you paid for your Genoa and if it came with any color.Thanks for your input,Pete

Way back when, they used to be called Johnson Sails, Inc. or JSI, and were based over in St. Pete. They're now based in South Carolina. I've also found their priced to be quite reasonable.In any event, they should stock what you need. You may have to wait a bit because everybody in the REST of the country is busy with spring commissioning, while we're winding down for the summer thunderstorms.I'd suggest a 150 for your boat, for three reasons:1) the H22 is a tad heavy for its size2) you'll need a bigger sail for those light air Florida summer days.3) anything bigger than a 150 will require someone to go forward every time you tack to help the sail around the front of the mast. Not fun when you're short-tacking up a channel.Several manufacturers make roller furling units for trailerable boats. SailNet should be able to help there as well. Good luck.PeterH23 "Raven"
