Roller Furl.... repair or replace?

My '83 Hunter 34 purchased last month has the original Hyde roller furl. The bearings are shot, and the upper swivel is seized (the yard has tried to free it up with lubrication to no avail). The next step would be to have them replace the bearings (about $700.00 in parts alone), and also deal with what is found with the upper swivel once they bring the rig down to work on it. Then of course there's labor cost. The question... given Murphy's law, I'm inclined to bite the bullet and retire this 17 year old system and install a new one. I'm looking for opinions on whether to repair or replace. If replace, what are the opinions on replacement systems - I've never had a roller furl before, so this is virgin ground for me, but I'm definately not up for hanking and hauling and changing and bagging, and bag dragging any more. Thanks in advance for your input. Dave.

Dave, Replace the new units are far superior and take less effort to use. Good Luck

Buy New

Buy a new Haken Roller Furler for her, She will love it and so will you. Harken has a great Web site. Probably go with the Unit 1 or Unit 1.5 Tim Gabrielse Hunter Legend 37

Just bought a new one

I just bought a new Harken Unit 1.0. Works great! And best of all, it reefs the sail well too. I spent about $1800 for the furler, you have to get a luff extension (tall rig) and cost $350 to get it installed. Harken has the best warranty in the business.
