Roller Boom

Hi Folks.
The roller boom on Swee'Pea (v 2166) was converted to jiffy reefing by the previous owner. I would like to restore the roller boom if possible. What I am looking for are some pictures of the gooseneck and the crank assembly to see if it is even possible. I have gone through all the pictures in the archives and have not found anything helpful. Any info would be gratefully appreciated . Thanks..... Sam

Hi Sam

Take my advice, keep the jiffy reefing. Roller reefing comes a very poor second compared to jiffy!

Sam,
Keep the jiffy (slab) reefing. It's a far better system than the old roller reefing. With jiffy reefing you can get a nice flat sail allowing you to point closer to windward than the roller reefing will give you. Also, you don't have to take sail slides out of the mast track nor do you need to disconnect the boom vang. I do my reefing from the mast and it takes about 2 minutes. The first reef goes in on the starboard tack and the second on the port tack. Never done the third reef and hope it's never needed!

If you're having trouble with the jiffy reefing setup maybe it just needs a couple of minor changes to the reefing lines.

Thanks Steve and Peter for the words of wisdom. You know how it is, you always wonder about what you do not have. Greg( the previous owner) did a very nice job of converting it. I just would like to have been able to play with the original design. Cheers.....Sam

As the others have said, Sam, the reefing you have got is a big
improvement. I used to have roller reefing on an earlier boat. The problem
was the Kicker or Vang. You cannot roll a boom that is secured to the deck
by a taught line. You have to have a sort of horseshoe shaped thing at the
upper end of the kicking strap/vang which holds the boom in its jaw while
allowing it to turn.

You really need to be able to flatten your sail in a blow. What you have is
much the safer rig, I believe.
