For those who want to paint their boat. This is a photo of my boom that I just finished applying the first coat of Perfection by rolling and tipping. I have spent weeks stripping and prepping my spars including 3 coats of primer wet sanded in between. That is a reflection of my back yard(through a window) in the photo. There are absolutely no brush marks. In fact I think it looks better than a sprayed job where you tend to get orange peel. The secret is to properly prep the suface, follow the instructions to a tee and thin the paint just right. I used a pane of glass to get the paint thin enough that it would flow out but not so thin that it would run. BTW, this is only my second time rolling and tipping paint. My boat babe rolled while I tipped. Tim R.

It looks good but not sure how I feel about HIGH GLOSS on spars within sight. But,thats just me. May the rest of your boat look as good. Fair Winds>>> David

Sweet- Nice job Tim. Wasnt there a guy who said he laughed at any boat that had the r+t method. At least you now wouldnt hear him as he was admiring your work. Keep the good work up! Rob

Launch date is 4/30

Still have a boatload of projects to finish up. - Last coat of paint on the spars(hopefully by next weekend) - Reinstall all the mast and boom HW. - I installed my 6 portlights today and just need to trim the excess 4000 away. - Also installed my waste pumpout. Will buy hose this week and hopefully have the head put togther by this time next week. - I cut out all but one of my cabin sole templates(using luan). Will apply 2 coats of sanding sealer and 1 coat of varnish on the teak and holly PW this week and start cutting. - Next I have to do some filling on the bottom and get it sanded so I can start applying the barrier coat. I plan on pulling the cover next weekend too. That will go pretty fast but needs to be done before I try to get the new sole in. Maybe the weekend of the 28th Rodd. I still have to buy my new graphics so I can apply them after the initial polishing. I checked out the alternator bracket on my engine and it is the new style. Tim R.

I wanted to start with a gloss(Platinum) as that was the original finish. I figure worst case I could probably do some very fine wet sanding to cut the gloss a little. Tim R.

Nice one less thing...

Quote: "I checked out the alternator bracket on my engine and it is the new style." Tim, That's a bonus and one less thing to do!! I'd like to be in by late April but I'm dependant on my mooring guy & he usually has my ball up by early May..

Ultimate Sole

Look into Ultimate Sole for your floor. We (the admiral) used it last year on our neglected floor. Great stuff! A real nice finish. Good Luck!

I looked into that and tried calling Steve but he never returned my call. I don't see any way to make it a satin finish on their website and obviously their support is not so good. I will probably use Bristol Finish as it is a very durable finish than I can build up with gloss and then add a final coat or two of satin if I decide I do not like the gloss. I spoke with their technical people and they were very helpfull. As for the mast and boom, I was just admiring the finish and realising I should really flatten the final coat of perfection as it is very shiney and may casue problems in direct sunlight. But if this were the topsides of a boat, boy would she be pretty! Tim R.

That looks great, Tim!

I have been doing the same with my mast this winter with Perfection in Snow White (the last coat will go on this weekend, too). Last year I did the boom. I am not sure I understand the concern about gloss on the mast and the boom. On the deck, it is a consideration for sure, but for the mast and boom, the glossier the better, as far as I'm concerned. I never noticed any problem last summer with the boom being glossy.

Thanks Scott

Did yours turn out well? Did you have to thin to get it to flow and not drip? I found that was the key to getting the brush marks to disappear. I am struggling a little with the gloss issue. I may speak with my rigger and see what he thinks. The gloss just looks so damn good in my basement! I used to live in Califon, NJ and worked in Morris Plains. We used to frequent the brew pub in Califon regularly. My wife(boat babe) is from Blairstown. Unfortunately I never made it to the lake(spent a lot of time in the water gap area though) when I was there although I heard it can be full of partying stinkpotters on the weekends;-) Tim R.

Roll and Tip

Roll out the paint with a foam roller then follow imediately with a good quality badger hair brush. I ran the brush(dry) over the rolled paint very lightly vertically holding the brush at a 45 degree angle and then across the same area horizontally. Washed the brush a few times during the whole process. There are some videos of this method our on youtube, at jamestown distributors and at yachtpaint.com Tim R.

Good photo of the prepped mast ...

I have been thinking about finding a way to hang the mast for the final coats so I can avoid the supports. It shouldn't be hard to do ... I cna use the ends and the hole where the intermediate shrouds are attached. We like our Starwind quite a bit. I never would have looked for one and she just happened to be available in the brokers listings when we were looking at Hunters, Cals and Catalinas and the like. Even though she is a boat from the 80's, you can still get virtually the exact same design in a Precision 27 (as of last year its a 28'). Sunfish Pond is a favorite trail on the AT that we take in the summer for a rewarding swim!

Hey Tim ...

Give me a shout sometime if you are visiting the in-laws this summer. We'll give you an opportunity to see what Lake Hopatcong is all about! The last little bit of ice finally disappeared yesterday in the warm weather and I was visiting the boat this afternoon! I'm going to leave the cover on until the mast is ready to be installed. The water level needs to come up a few feet anyway. I'm hoping spring isn't too dry!

Thanks Scott

We usually only get down there in the winter but if I do get there in the warmer months I will definately look you up. Or maybe a lager at a local pub when we are there this Christmas. My wife will be there in a few weeks to visit with her mom. Thanks for the invite. BTW, the final coat of Perfection goes on tomorrow. We spent a few hours cleaning the basement to reduce the dust level. We will also hang plastic tarps from the ceiling to protect the area and wet the floor. Someday I will have a barn with a bigger workshop and paint shop. We have decided to mix the paint 1 for 1 with some flattening agent which should give us a low semi-gloss. Tim R.
