We snowbird in order to catch the most sun and warmth. We sail a 23 in the North and a 222 on the Gulf. Skin cancer is a pressing concern. We would like to find an easy possibly pop-up rig that can be quickly set and ditched on the hook or at the dock. Any ideas?

I assume you are looking for a set up you can use when at rest, not while sailing. I have only seen this company's ads in the back of a magazine, but it looks nice.

All you need is a couple of Polytarps. They're inexpensive, easy to set up and take down, and they stow very easy in the lazarett. For the 222, I use an 8'X10' over the boom and attached to the lifelines, mast, and end of boom with 3/16" braid lines cut to the desired length. I also use a 6'X8' tarp for over the forward hatch which is tied to the mast, fore stay, pulpit, and lifelines. I bought an extra tarp the same size this year to go in the stern. The grommets on these tarps are never really centered to where you need them, so I bought a grommet tool with extra grommets and installed them where they were needed. I use slipped clove hitches to secure the ropes to the life lifelines, and round turns with a slipped half hitches for securing the ropes to bales and eye straps. This makes it very fast in setting up and breaking down the tarps. The tarps keep the sun out and provide a wind tunnel that really makes the cabin a lot cooler on those 90 degree hot summer days.

Thank you for your information and useful thumbnails. I hav a similar cloth that I can rig over the boom with a center gromet and eye bolt that works fairly well as a sun cover on the hook. Your aft rig is interesting and looks like it would help under sail. Thanks much, RolfTom
