"Another birth ground is seen as choppy seas where several waves moving independently merge by chance. But scientists say a giant of that sort would live for no more than a few seconds or minutes, whereas some are suspected of lasting for hours and traveling long distances." I wonder if they would show up on radar.

One more thing.

I would bet a paycheck that they would show up on radar. whether you would know what was, is a different story. My guess is that ii would appear a a relatively straight line across your screen. Probably would appear as land would along the coast. If you saw that, what would your next move be if you were in open water far from land? Probably puzzled by the screen, you would be adjusting your different clutters and sensativity. Scratching your head and THENNNNNNNNNNNN.....whoosh.

When I was growing up we would often travel down the West Side Highway in Manhattan and I loved to see the ocean liners at the Hudson River piers. I remember once seeing the ship (I guess it was the Michaelangelo) after it had encountered a rogue wave. At first glance it was not extremely damaged, but you could see steel railings at the level of the bridge which had been bent like noodles, and windows banged in. The amazing thing was the height of the damage, like looking up at the top of a 10 story building. I can't imagine what would happen to my 10 meters of fiberglass, but if I were on it, I wouldn't be around to see the damage.

Or....

Would it be better to motor into the wave? It may not make a difference anyway with a wave that size :) I would have to say you might survive by doing a duck dive but your boat will not. BUT...it would really suck if your boat did survive and you dove into the water and after it passed you saw your boat motor away and leave you there :) Oh yeah...left off the most important thing...very first thing to do...put in a call for help on the radio.

OR........................

or, just as the wave is about to hit, place both hands behind your head, place your head between your legs and kiss your ass 'goodbye'

Wow

10 rogue waves at any given time in the world? That is scary. Doesnt it say in the good book, somewhere in Luke that the nations will be in perplexity and the waves will be roaring? Oh well something to that I guess. I guess the hopes of us global circumnavigators, has just been dashed!

Was watching the TV show...

The Deadliest Catch when a rouge wave hit one of the boats. They didn't even see it coming. They got hit broadside but I don't remember if the boat turtled or not. Still, I'd hate to be hit by any big wave.

Perfect storm

What happened at the end of that movie was fictional. Non one survived from the Andrea Gail so there is no real way of knowing. They could have simply sunk from a failed engine. The book is an excellent read. Hollywood killed another good story:) Tim R.
