Rocking & a rolling at anchor on O'Day 25

I have noticed that my O'Day 25 c/b tends to rock & roll more than the other boats at anchorage. If I lower the centerboard, then it just bangs in the slot with the waves which is worse. My boat also tends to turn sideways to the wind quite a bit while at anchor and then is also sideways to the waves. I know part of this is because of the size of the boat & the shoal keel but I want to see if anyone else has found anything to help the movement at anchor.

sPk, The boat is as ready as a race horse. They sail uncontrollably with the least of air..

You can kill the centerboard noise by only dropping it part way.
The good part is that when that normal movement stops, it wakes me up to check things out. Fortunately, that is few and far between. The pitch and roll actually helps me sleep.

All thougth I own a 26' O'day and not the 25 I too have the same issue of the boat drifting all over the place while on anchor. Having the board down,"swing Keel" helps to stabilize the boat. The very best solution to the other problem is an "anchor sail" check out Banner Bay Marine, you will love it , It will all most stop those nasty gyrations. I spend a lot of time at anchor with a lot of sleepless nights untill I got one of these. You can also buy a kit from sailrite but you need access to the sewing machine..

My solution for my 32

Was an anchor sail and even when the wind dies down and most boats are all starting to be facing different directions we tend to stay in one place.

I made shims for my CB last winter.

And what a difference this season. I can have it all the way down with total silence. I also re-wired the mast with stand-offs so no clanking either. I'll post pics as a project post this winter. I'm also making a riding sail for next season.

Shims?

Thanks to everyone for their responses. I think I will get an anchor sail. I was hoping to convert an old windsurf sail but maybe I'll have to buy one instead.

Where did you put the shims? I rebuilt my badly damaged centerboard a couple years ago and tightened up the pin but that didn't stop the side to side banging in the waves. I'd like to learn more of how you shimmed the centerboard.

What I did...

I dropped the CB and cleaned the trunk slot. Then I cut a piece of cardboard a little wider than the trunk slot and gradually trimmed it to the exact profile width. As suspected it tapers a little narrower towards the top )to release from the original hull mold. I measured the difference between this dimension and the unshaped CB section that resides in the trunk slot. I planned on buying PVC sheeting (or panels if you like) but it turns out I had some. 3/16ths is what I needed, yours may be different. I cut the panels to the shape of each side of the flat head of the CB, drilled the pin holes (mine were a std size 1-1/2" hole saw dia.) and pre-drilled and countersunk holes for flat head ss screws in each lower corner. I bedded and screwed the panels in place. The screws have a cone shaped bottom of the head and can be countersunk deep below the surface dimension of the plastic. Make sure they are so they don't rub in the trunk and tear up the gelcoat.
With a belt sander and a very course grit belt so the plastic would sand and not melt I sanded each side to match the taper of my cardboard profile leaving it slightly wider for a final fitting. Down the boat I went with the belt sander and did a final fit.
Be aware the CB will be heavier out of the water than in so you can't leave it with too much friction. Also the trunk slot is not perfectly shaped and I had to do a lot of in and out fitting before I was confident it wouldn't get jammed in the up position. It was well worth the effort.
