Did you celebrate Independence Day on your boat? Here in Seattle, a popular July 4th activity is drifting on Elliott Bay while the professional fireworks explode overhead. But some years, it's hard to tell the amateur pyrotechnics from the big stuff. What do you think about fireworks on the water? Do you enjoy firing a few rockets from your boat, or do you think folks making that much commotion in your anchorage should walk the plank? Tell us what you think then vote in the Quick Quiz on the home page.

More then that if a post doesn’t apply

More then that if a post doesn’t apply to you most people just skip it without comment. A lot of posts only apply to a specific boat or location, Do you complain when someone asks about anchoring at point x if you only sail at point y? Do you complain if someone asks about a Honda outboard when you only use an inboard? All the best, Robert Gainer

How do you clean fireworks debris off boat?

I returned to home port after celebrating the 4th on Lake Superior to find little black spots all over our Mac 26S. Thinking at first the spiders had been hard at it I started washing only to find the little black spots run blue when hit with water. This is obviously from the fireworks display. Unfortunately the spots don't come all the way off easily. Anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you get your boat clean again? Thanks! Pat Otto

We HAD been looking forward to anchoring

out and watching the displays over Long Island from the Great South Bay. The weather did not cooperate, the big show was canceled because the swell was too high for the safety of the fireworks barges, and it rained. So we drove down to a point where we could see what there was anyway.. Fireworks on my boat? No way, too much risk...and they are illegal in NY anyway!

Cannon fire

We have a 1/4 scale naval carronade, black powder with a cannon lock/musket cap ignition and used to fire it with 8 oz powder loads off the bow of our 37' Lord Nelson tug trawler. Nice boom and big smoke cloud.

MARINA MADNESS!

Our marina is famous in our part of the state for their beautiful fireworks displays. They set off the display from the end of our pier and it's the high point of the boating season! Bill on STARGAZER

weather kept us home this year

We had talked about anchoring out in the middle of the bay (out of the ship channel) and watching the 2 displays from Mobile and Fairhope, but the weather was awful, and the Mobile display was postponed. Not to mention the danger of so many boats, so much alcohol, wandering around in the dark . . . We have several neighbors who apparently spend the equivalent of my monthly allowance on fireworks, so there is no need to go anywhere to see a great show.

Thames River vantage point

Normally, we are on the hard, watching on the beach in Rye. But last year, we were moored in the Thames River in New London, CT, to watch the Grucci brothers "World Class" fireworks. (thanks to the Mohegan Sun, who now finances this display) They are timed to the music onthe local radio station! Bbq before the display, then we sleep on board, thereby avoiding the mass exodus along I95. It was heaven!!! And BRUCE - next year, I wanna be on YOUR boat when that cannon goes off!

We just went out in the Sound for a long sail

and dodged rockets and roman candle balls from the Swinomish on the way back in. Good thing the channel is wider than their range. It was a good day.

Richard M, If it weren't for our Independence day

we too could be singing "God Save The Queen". Had a great time at MDR the fireworks were spectacular. During the show you are not allowed to drop anchor so everyone just gets out into the center of the channel and drifts. We went out to the far end of the harbor and dropped anchor anyway. I didn't want to drift into that crowd. What a zoo, while waiting for the ramp to clear we cruised around the harbor and watched the debaucheries. The wife enjoyed the sail that day and the show at night so much that she announced that she is now ready to go to Catalina, (sans Catalina Express). Frank

The most serious danger on a vessel is fire!

Now why would anyone consider firing rockets from their boat is beyond me. Don't get me wrong I love to watch a good fireworks show but have no need to fire them myself. We'll go out to the Bay and watch the fireworks show at the St. Pete Pier then we'll sail back and be home by midnight.

Made a week of it

Sailed up to Bainbridge Isl, watched the local parade then sailed to Elliot bay for the fireworks, and sailed back to Bainbridge. No shooting fireworks from the boat just watch the pros, and look out for the other boats.

Let 'em rip...but not overhead!!

We have a cruising spot in the California delta system. We simply float out into the river on my tender to get one of the best shows in America. The Hilton family puts on a terrific show, which is a few miles away. That means we get a great show without all the chaos and mess. On another occasion, we were in the Santa Barbara harbor a few years back. They put on a terrific show. One knuckle head next to us lit off a flare. Problem is, he launched the flare into his cabin. Needless to say, we worked quick to save the guys boat. We then made him walk the plank. I love America!!

Spent the week out...

We were in the bay at Gills Rock, WI and watched. Only mistake we make was getting there before the "boat Parade" which rocked us for about 10 minutes. Anchor held and just spent the night in the bay... beautiful morning sail.
