Participants on this list will remember Robert Gainer, also a participant who died not so long ago. At the time, there were a lot of comments on his helpfulness. I had contacted his former employers at the Beacon Institute, who also mourned his passing to let them, his friends and family see the kind words that were said about him on this list. I just received the following notice about a memorial for him. Maybe anybody who lives nearby might want to attend. Please join the friends of Robert Gainer in a celebration of his life on June 21, 2008 at 11 am at the Beacon Institute gallery (199 Main Street in Beacon, NY). A reception will follow the service. Please RSVP by June 14 - 845-838-1600 x10. _________________ Jo Merchant Office Manager The Beacon Institute 199 Main St Beacon, NY 12508 845-838-1600 x10 845-838-6613 (fax)

Robert Gainer....

While I will not be able to attend this memorial, I will certainly remember Robert Gainer fondly. He was quite a sailor. He and I exchanged a lot of email over the years and I finally met him at the Annapolis Boat Show not long ago. We both owned and sailed 23-ft Alberg Sea Sprites some years ago, only he sailed his across the Atlantic -- the only known person to have done so and without any kind of steering aids, if you can imagine. Gainer's experiences while ocean sailing are some of the most realistic descriptions I've ever read. His comments on what works and what does not are right on target. He was quite a guy and I miss him. Glad they are having a memorial.
