I am very sorry to hear about the passing of Robert.
He was a valued member of our sailing forum and a frequent contributor. His knowledge and kind assistance will be missed by all not just for his knowledge but his humanity. It is not often that we get to know the people we forum with personally, Again, his passing is a lesson for us all not to miss the opportunities we have in connecting with one another. He never bragged about his accomplishments, which are impressive indeed. Frank

Wow, very sad indeed. he accomplished a ton in his lifetime, would have been a man I would have liked to drink a beverage with and hear his story. My condolences and best wishes to his family. Ross in Tampa

It was interesting to read the obituary posted in the link. Aside from a tiny handful of people (relatively), Robert Gainer was unknown. But yet, he sounds like he was a really decent, caring human being, more interested in knowledge for its own sake than in knowledge for the purpose of making money, more interested in helping satisfy and stimulate that curiosity in others than in fame. That obituary reminds me, again, of how many people there are out there in the world who are like that - people that we never know or only briefly brush up against. Often, the ones who make the biggest impressions on are those who are the opposite of Robert. So even in his death, Robert reminds me to keep this in mind.

Crossing the Bar ...
Dave, that was nice. Last summer and fall I was working in New Windsor, NY, right across the Hudson from Beacon. There were many moments when I had the opportunity to gaze across the Hudson and I often thought 'there's a fellow over there that knows a great deal about this sailing that I love'. I would think about going over there and finding a way to make a new acquaintance, but I never did. He will be missed here, and from the writing of his memory at the Beacon Institute, he will be missed by many.

BoB Gainer and I exchanged a lot of ideas and e-mail over the years. Yet it wasn't until the Annapolis Boat show of 2007 that we actually met. He was quite a guy. He had had some terrifying experiences while blue water sailing and he learned a lot from those experiences. He was a generous guy and shared what he learned with anyone who asked. In my mind, he was a very understated guy. He really liked this poem I sent him some time ago, so I thought I'd post it again here: "On an ancient wall in China Where a brooding Buddha blinks, Deeply graven is the message It is later than you think. The clock of life is wound but once And no man has the power To tell just when the hands will stop, At late or early hour. Now is all the time you own, The past a golden link, Go cruising now my brother……. It is later than you think." I'll miss him.

Sad News for sure.
It seems strange to me. I've never met him but I truly feel as if I've lost a friend. I guess we get to know people on this forum a little better than we realize. It takes something like this to point it out. He freely passed on the wisdom and knowledge that he gained through experience and training. The subtle way that his posts read and his knwoledge had led me to think of him as an elder statesman on our forum. I had read his profile quite some time ago but didn't notice his birth date. He was 2 years younger than I am. He always came across as a classy guy. I'll miss hearing from him, Tom
