We have an approximate 8" rip at the very top of our main sail. It was previously repaired with some kind of tape prior to our purchase. Can I mend this sail on my sewing machine using the same cloth? Can't seem to find ann info on repairs. Thanks all!

is it rotten

I had a tear in the top panel of my main on my DS II. It was rotten from sun exposure or mildew, not exactly sure which, but I could poke my finger through that top panel almost anywhere. I took it to my local sailmaker who replaced that panel for about $35 (cdn). It was well worth it. My sailmaker did advise, that if I did do any repairs to my own sail, to use sailmakers thread, and a zig zag stitch as large as possible (about setting 6 on your home machine) I think the thread is called Dacron. If you use a straight stitch, the sail is more likely to tear again along the dotted stitch line according to him. Good luch either way.

cheap fix

I bought a 1982 Daysailer last spring, had a tear on the mast edge, used sail tape which fell off after one use, then used good old white duct tape from Home Depot - surely a cheap fix but it holds fantastic (this was on the original sail so I didn't want to invest too much in as I hope to replace in the next few years).
