Have a H240 and would like to eliminate the topping lift for quicker reefing, forgetting to sinch up etc. How do they work? Are they easerly adjusted under sail and from the cockpit. I trailer and day sail so need a quick connect/disconnect? Is it a hassel to connect/use. What brand, did contact one company Gar??? and the did not return email. Appreciate general operational info as my brain can not work out from the photo how they connect and work. regards

Garhauer rigid boom vang
The Garhauer vang is an excellent all-stainless steel spring boom vang. It connects to the mast and boom with a small section of 1" T-Track that they provided, so it is a quick disconnect. I paid only $190 delivered, for one for my H-26. I suspect that because they are so cheap compared to other brands, that they don't do a lot of hand-holding with customers. Rigid vang operation
The spring inside the Garhauer rigid vang holds the vang extended and supports the boom, therefore no topping lift is needed. To lower the boom, the vang has a tackle system included, similar to a soft vang. When you tighten the tackle, you compress the spring on the vang and lower the boom towards the deck. I adjust mine from the cabin opening, but it is not something you trim all the time.

I get the idea of it now, thanks for the good discriptions. Now my brain is ticking. Since you vang it down against a spring it can not be locked up so can not be used as a anti-cuningham to open up the leache on close hauls in light air. So you can not sheet in against the locked up vang, right? Does the rigid vang give you 4 plus inches of movement on the leache end of the boom. So you vang down for sailing and when you release the cord the spring moves it up x inhes? What happens when sails are down and I usually sheet in hard against the topping lift to stop the boom swinging, is the spring strong enough to hold the boom up out of the way and stop the boom swinging? too many questions sorry!

The travel on the vang for a H-26 is about 5 inches. For light air you completely release the spring and the end of the boom lifts up (a lot), depending on how you have the vang positioned. There is enough resistance in the spring that I can sheet in to control the main, yet still keep the sail fuller than if the sail alone was holding up the boom. Remember, the vang attaches to the mast bottom and the boom with a length of track, so you can adjust the lift. With the sails down, the vang supports the boom under any circumstances, you use the mainsheet to pull it tight and there is less boom swing than with a topping lift. Did I answer everything?

Is the type of rigid vang discussed in this thread quick release? How difficult are they to install? The Garhauer web site says the length is made to order. How does one know how long it should be for a H260? Thanks.

Any considerations when lowering mast on H260?
Are there any considerations of the rigid vang hardware mounted on the mast interfering with the un-steping of the mast? The clearance seems pretty small. Does the vang track mounted on the mast clear the deck, on does it need to be removed when lowering the mast?

I installed a Garhauer Vang this spring on my H260. You can speak with Mark by calling at 909-946-6194, he is very helpful and can provide instructions for proper size and measurements they need to fabricate one right for your boat. When I ordered mine, I had to send a tracing of the boom and mast cross section and they made a custom bracket for installation. Each bracket is attached with 6 or 8 1/4 inch machine screws. To make sure there is clearance, I held the mast base bracket up for measurement when the mast was in the deck hinge but still on the crutch. If you mount the bracket too low, it can interfere. If they are using a track now, it would probably be less critical, and probably eaiser to deal with when taking boom off. The spring is very strong and can hold the boom up for fuller sail in light air. Fair winds, Tom

Here is a picture showing where I mounted the track on my 94 H-26. It is about 1" up the mast, I installed it in 1996 and have no problems stepping the mast. The black marks are where I mount the lower vang slide.

If Garhauer today gives you a choice of fixed fittings for the mount, or a track, I would take the track. It is a lot more forgiving in the installation, and gives you more mounting and adjusting versatility.
