Considering replacing the standard boom vang on our 29.5 with a rigid vang so as to do away with the topping lift. Interested in your experiences with brand/model of vang as well as with the fiberglass rod "boom kicker". Will installation of a rigid vang interfere with opening of the midships hatch? Thanks Grant

US Spars

Our h29.5 came with a US Spars rigid vang. See link. Works very well and there is enough clearance to open the hatch. Hope this helps. Monty

Garhauer is always a good choice

Excellent construction. Unbeatable prices

Lazy jacks

For years I was over done with rigid boom vang, topping lift, and lazy jacks. I now use the topping lift as an aux flag halyard and the rigid vang does little to "lift" the boom in light air. I can do the same with the lazy jacks. I have even considered going back to a non rigid vang. BUT, with all that said, if I wanted to replace my current rigid vang or wanted a rigid vang I would order the Garhauer.

Sounds like your vang is not adjusted correctly if it will not lift the boom when eased.

Alan, u could b right

Alan, you could be right, but it takes a LOT of lift to get it much higher than my bimini. I've never tried to adjust it, if it will EVER warm up I'll take a look at that! Which is another reason for the Garhaur-aren't they real easy to adjust?

Re: Adjustments

There are two adjustments you can make. One is more of the fixed variety. The tension in the rod that lifts the boom needs to be adjusted to give a sufficient amount of boom lift. The second is the downward pull on the boom which is adjusted with the control line. Could be from 8:1 up to 32:1 depending on configuration. When the control line is eased the boom should be pushed up by the internal spring.
