Hello all-
I recently came into an early 80's O'Day 34. The boat is in nice shape for its age but some of the deck hardware looks a little long in the tooth to say the least. I've been to the local West Marine to check out prices of blocks, travelers, etc. Boy things $ure have changed since I sailed my Laser in college!

What are my options as far as finding used gear here in New England or getting deals on new stuff? A friend said there's a consignment place in RI as well as a company that made him a really nice custom stainless vang for his Catalina 34. They make other stuff as well but he couldn't remember the name of them.

Anybody have any leads? Thanks in advance.

Check out Garhauer Marine. They are located in Ca. and had been the OEM mfg for most of the exterior hardware on Catalinas for years. Their stuff is well made and comes with a 10 year warranty. Some of their stuff is sold at SBO.

Get a catalogue from them, their on-line catalogue is NOT the best.

I had a Garhauer rigid vany on my Ranger, which I installed and it was scary powerful. Well made and strong. Very good customer service with that company.
Buy a good one and go on to something else.

I'd second ordering blocks, deck hardware and the vang from Garhauer. I'd point out that they've become stock gear on several boat lines including Catalina.

Thanks guys / Garhauer on eBay

Just the info I need. By the way, I just found a new Garhauer Vang for sale up on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180484357974&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

Too bad I'm not ready for a vang but the guy seems willing to find me deals on other Garhauer stuff... or so he says. I guess the Catalina factory's closing in California and he's got some factory seconds and such.

Anyway... thanks for the info... especially about the local sources because sometimes it's good to hold it in your hand. I'm sure I'll have plenty of more dumb questions in the future as my mind warms up to the boating hobby again.

One reason to order directly from Garhauer is that they will make custom attachment hardware for the boom and mast. Buying from this guy will probably mean that you need to make your own.

Huh?

Why would I care if the mounts fit my mast and boom when I've already established that I'm not in the market for rigid vang? You assumed that the auction included no mounting brackets and I corrected you by stating the stock Catalina brackets were included. That's it.

Maybe the TITLE of your post has mislead a few to believe you were looking for a VANG.
Might I suggest that you file this info for future use, then you won't have to come back and ask again.

Happy Sailing

Well, let's see... the thread title says RIGID VANG BRAND NAME.

Also, the boom and mast on a Catalina aren't necessarily the same as those found on an O'Day...and the thread title said O'Day...

DUH....

Original and Replacement Parts for O'Day

I get all my original and replacement parts for my O'Day at D&R Marine in Assonet, Ma. Rudy Dickerson and and his buddy Fred worked at the Original O'Day factory. They supply parts cheaper than anyone else in the industry. For Example, last time I was in the shop, they had a Garhauer traveler all set up and ready to go, mounts included, for a fraction of the cost of a Harken, about one-forth the price. Same with the Garhauer rigid boom vang. It cost less than any other boom vang on the market, with the boom and mast fittings included.
Over the years, I have purchased the large lexan fixed-ports, original teak parts, one of a kind stainless hinges, halyards, and sheets from them. They will even make you a replacement rudder, since they have been known to delaminate.
