I have removed some panels for sanding and varnishing. There is a gap behind them about 1/2 to 3/4 inch. Would rigid styrofoam help and as insulation? Also, what would you use to stop the fiberglass from sweating.
The temperature of the surface is lower than the dew point. Therefore you have the option of, warming the surface, drying the air, or insulating the surface with a vapor proof coating. Car windows fog up when the glass is cold and the humidity is high. So we turn on the air conditioner and the heat. I think if you could find a foil faced foam about an 1/8th inch thick it would serve your needs. A 1/16 inch of foam will allow you to hold hot coffee in your hand. But you must prevent the water vapor from contacting the cold surfaces.
TonyHome Depot has some foil faced stuff that is not a foam, but looks more like a bubble pack used for packaging. It is made for insulation, and has a fairly high "R" rating. If not mistaken, I think it has a higher "R" rating than the rigid foam. Beauty of this stuff is it is so flexible it can be put anywhere. I have bought some for my boat, but haven't installed it yet. It's not real expensive.
I went to HD and described the insulation that looks like buble pack and has foil backing. They looked at me like I was from a different planet. Does anyone here know the product name ?Tony B
Tony,The brand name on the stuff I got is " Reflectix" and they have a website. www.reflectixinc.com It is about 1/8 thick and from their label I think the R value for a stand alone application is 3.9 It did come from Home Depot
My brother got this at Home Depot also. The HD store by me did not carry it. We installed this around 3 sides and the bottom of my ice box. This stuff is very flexable and easy to work with. We used spray adhesive to hold it in place. The final outcome is a very professional looking job. I won't know how well it helps insulate until next Summer.
Thanks to everyone. Found it at Ace Hardware for a few bucks more than Lowes. I bought a roll. Actually GF picked it up. The 2 ft. stuff was $1.50 per foot or 1.05/ft if you buy the 50Ft roll. In addition to the 2'ft that I bought, they also had it in 16" and 4' wide. THANKS AGAINTony B
