I'm planning on ordering the Garhauer RV20 rigid boom vang. Would appreciate insight/comments from anyone who has installed this model or other rigid boom vangs... thanks..

Been there

I have the Garhauer on my H 33. I.m pleased with the value. you can pay many times more for not a whole lot more vang. Think out your mounting arrangement BEFORE ordering. Most of their mounts are custom. They can make up exactly what you want. I had a special piece made up to fit the oddball mast piulip on the 33. works great. Do It!

Rigid Vang

Sam, Thanks for the info... how do you go about measuring the boom/mast especially with odd shapes? a template? John

I put a RV20 on my H310

I installed a new Garhauer RV20 on my H310 last year and put one on a buddies O'day 322. You need to messure from the cabin roof to the bottom of your boom, then you need to make a template of your mast and boom. I bought a contour jig from Home Depot and made a pattern of both. I then traced the outline on to a thin pice of card board stock and mailed to to them. "Very simple to do"!!! What I also did was to cut out the pattern from the card board to "make sure" it was a "exact" fit. When I installed the vang, I used 4 tec srews to hold the vang in place, drilled all the pilot holes, removed the vang, drilled larger holes and tapped with a 1/4-20 tap. Make note that the 1st. set of holes have to be exact or you will never get the vang to line up with the holes after they are taped!!!! "YOU ONLY GET ON SHOT AT THIS"!!!

Let me finish

Sometimes my computer has a mind of its own. Anyway, once all of that is done and you are ready for the final install. I took an old bike tire inner tube and cut it the size of the vang mounting plates and put it between the vang and my mast/boom to protect from disimular metals, I also used a tread compound for the same reason. I have heard of a few people having problems dealing with Garhauer, I did not. I swear by my vang, my boat sails so much better now. I have less weather helm, less heel and get more speed from my boat due to better sail shape. Let me know if you need anymore help. Good luck. Steve, s/v The Odyssey (H310)

More vang

For the templates of the spar profiles I had the advantage of my mast being down, so I was able to trace the template. However , with the odd tabernackle used on the later 33's I devised a "T" shaped mount which Garhauer was able to weld up for me. It placed the mast end of the vang closer to the deck to improve the vang's advantage. You can just about make it out in my Photo Forum entry "Mast Wiring thru deck trap". Beyond that I can't add anything to Steve Cook's suggestions, which are superb. Follow his procedure to the letter and you'll avoid the pitfalls I encountered. And no I don't want to talk about it. Dealing with Garhauer can be a challenge, particularly if there's something even a little bit custom, such as all vangs, all traveler kits, (which are also excelent by the way) and much of the hardware. If your order ends up on Guido's desk resign yourself to calling on a weekly basis. Order early so you'll have it by mid season.

Thanks

Appreciate the advice. I have ordered it from Gauerhauer and they say two weeks delivery. Based on the notes, I doubt it but I'm in no big hurry now since it raining and cold. Thanks again..

Cold?

Cold, what the hell do you mean, "cold"? You live in Texas. You should come up here to Wisconsin and I'll show you what cold is really like!!! We still have 4 months to go until spring lift in.... Anyway, just joking. Good luck with Garhauer, they told me 2 weeks and it really took 4, my buddy's vang took 8 weeks for the 1st one, the 2nd. one took 3 weeks and the 3rd. vang took 2 weeks, They finaly got it right. Mine was right the 1st. time... Let me know if you need more help. Steve, s/v The Odyssey (H310)

Not so cold

Steve, Sorry.. didn't mean to offend you "Northerners"... I guess having January sailing days in the mid 60 degree range is not so bad after all. (Hey... that's in the + 60's) :) John
