Rigid Boom Vang Install

On a 97 40.5, I just finished installing a rigid boom vang from Garhauer. Costs $340 and works GREAT! Installation required removing the boom to properly drill the eight holes and tap them, but other than that it was an easy 3 hours. If you need details drop me an e-mail.

I installed one, too

Last summer I installed the Garhauer also. I did not have to remove the boom, though. Some friends at the marina helped hold the boom while I drilled and tapped the first holes. I love how it supports the boom even when the topping lift is slacked.

Rigid Boom Van

If you have a good rigid boom vang you can get rid of the topping lift and save the leech of the mainsail from chafe etc. clipping the topping lift down by a cap shroud out of the way is a good idea for it makes a great spare halyard if you ever break one.

Garhauer Vang

Mickey,Got my new vang last week. When you attached the two brackets did you use any material between the aluminum mast/boom and the Stainless Steel brackets? I was told I needed to isolate the brackets from the aluminum. Not sure if really necessary. Thanks in advance.Less/v Mutual Fun

Les:Just starting the project myself. We were going to put a piece of plastic between the mast/boom and the S.S. brackets. After a short analysis we decided to just put nylon washers under the brackets. Going to drill and tap the mast/boom with 1/4 x 20 tap and coat the threads with never sieze.Any other thoughts would be appreciated too.
