Does anyone have any knowledge of these Rigid (brand) tenders. I'm looking for a used RIB and have come across these a time or two. They look apealing but don't know if they're practical. Any thoughts or knowledge? http://www.rigidboats.com/tenders1.html

Yeah, the weight concerns me. I've come across some used ones that are reasonably priced. Thanks for the comments.

On deck or davits

Unless you have a good set of davits, the weight is a killer. Even with davits, not sure I would want that much weight hanging off the stern. I don't think a lot of people realize how much a large weight, on either end of the boat, can upset everything.

if I was going to have something that heavy, it would have a far more efficient hull shape.. inflatables have tons of drag and do not move through the water easily at speed, their benefit is the low weight and ease of storage. this has all the negatives, and none of the positives... sounds like a horrible design to me.

It's patterned after an RIB which has inflatable floatation tubes with a planing, hard shell hull/bottom...this enables it to carry a much larger cargo load than a simple hardshell vessel of the same size.... and perform vastly better than an all inflatable boat.

This boat has the hard, planing bottom but, the "inflatable" tubes are hardshell also. I would imagine the hull shape is very efficient. The hard flotation tubes are more durable than the pvc or hypalon type.... theoretically.... but there may be drawbacks to not having "soft" sides for a yacht tender.

That said, I think it's rather ugly and somewhat ridiculous looking. A deal breaker for me anyway.

I love my Rigid

I bought the 8.5 and I could not be happier. I used my Mercury 8 HP 2 stroke motor with Hydro foil and with GPS maximum speed was 17.4 MPH. It planes out in maybe 6 seconds and takes wave with out water entering the boat. Everything about this boat is quality. The side hulls have the hatches which allows lots of storage and the bow has a large hatch for storing anchor, life vest and small children. The boat weights 160 pounds and I have garhauer heavy duty davit rated at 400 pounds. Motor weights 70 pounds and I can lift all for overnight storage etc. It has this large rubber rub rail around the entire vessels and it eliminates the need for fenders around your big boat. When departing boat due to the large pontoons you can step on the flat sides and step onto your boat or deck very easily with out fear of falling off. The only negatives is water slapping when anchored and the drain for cockpit is placed approx 3/4 inch above deck floor which allows standing water in boat.
