I am trying to buy my sister a new outboard motor for her Catalina 27 as a gift. The four stroke motors are 128-133 lbs and available in 20" & 25". The 2 stroke motors are only 78 lbs and again availible in 20" & 25". I have access to the Mercury line and for various reasons I would prefer to buy the Mercury product. Please, what experienced advice is out there to help arrive at the best motor for her? The difference in cost is not a major consideration. I am just trying to buy the right motor for her. Are the additional features of the 4 stroke enough to compenstate for the additional weight? What is the right length? Thank you for your help and input.

Check Head Size

I have read where the heads or motors of the newer outboards will not fit into the well of the older C27's. If you have the well, you better check.

C27 Outboards - Use C27 Association

Hi - try the link to the 'unofficial" C27 website and try www.c27.org for the other one. This has been done before and they'll know how. Stu

Mercury Motors

Bookie, Not sure if you know but Tohatsu Motors makes the under 10hp Mercury motors as well as the Nissian line, Mercury will be the highest priced then the Tohatsu followed by the Nissian. Other than the paint there all the same.I bought a 5hp Nissian this spring and there was $650.00 difference between the Mercury and Nissian.

Fitting an outboard in the 'well'

What is the 'well' that you mention (because a new outboard may not fit it)? In my C27, I have a compartment under the back seat. There is a square opening/window in the stern of the boat which opens into this compartment. The outboard is mounted on the sill of this opening. Only the very front of the engine and the control arm protrude into the comparment. The only constraints I see are the height and width of the head as it fills the opening.

Height and Width

I was told the height or the new outboards may not fit in the well. If the height of the head is any higher than my old 9.9 johnson, I do not think it will tip forward out of the water into the well,. Just pasting it on.

In the transom cut-out

A 5hp 4 stroke will fit into the transom as will a 8hp 2 stroke.
