Addendum

My boat is a 26' O'Day, the other boat was an older 25' or 26' sailboat of an unknown type. My O'Day displaces 4800lbs (with a full load), and my daughter, who was rowing, tips the scales at just under 100lbs. Between her rowing, my sculling with the rudder, and the tide carrying us, we managed to get the boat to the dock. The hull was a bit scuffed and scratched by the collison, though.

I think that the point may have been missed.

Whenever two sailboats are in close proximity THEY ARE RACING! Like it or not that may have been the deal. The guy was probably doing what I have come to learn is called hunting. He wanted to force you to bear off or go into the wind and therefore loose the race. Are you sure that you were not an active participant? If you were, that's ok, doesn't make you bad. Racing rules are not exactly the same as The Colregs. One is not obligated, in my reading of The Colregs, to run aground in order to avoid a collision. alan PS By the way, if you were not playing the game then he IS a jerk.
