I had the standing rigging replaced on my boat after purchase. I now have all the old cable in my garage. I cannot bring myself to just trow it away, so I am wondering what else it might be used for. Any suggestions?

Spare parts

Well - if they didn't destroy it as they removed it, you now have spare forestays, backstays, etc. Do you need them all? Probably not. But in an emergency, or as a stand-in while some other maintenance is being conducted. I ended up keeping two of my old shrouds when I rerigged the standing rigging. One is a spare and the other I plan to cut up and use for various other things such as a emergency cable on the outboard - make sure it stays with the boat if it came off the mount. However, if I do use it for that, I don't have the skill to make new "eyelets" on the ends of the freshly cut wire so will have to pay someone to do it for me. It might be more cost effective to just go out and pay for a new cable.

Old rigging...

When I had my old C&C re-rigged some time ago, I keep the old standing rigging. I wound up using it to make some newer life lines (using Johnson hand swaged fittings) and to make a variety of headsail pendants. But....I had a lot of wire that eventually made its way to the dumpster at my marina. It disappeared a few hours after leaving it there and I assume some other sailor used it for some good purpose...

left over wire

Kerry, The wire used in standing rigging is pretty stiff to use for utility purposes, but I'll bet it would make a terrific dog run cable!

label your spares

I carry them in the boat as spares, but because the forestay and shrouds are different lengths, I have labeled them with duct tape, wound them up and put them in the bottom of my repair bucket, along with other lengths of line, spare turnbuckles etc.
