I have opportunity to purchase oday daysailer 17 - I am a begginer(only sunfish experience). The seller states the "Stays" will need to be replaced - What is involved and how expensive ? Other than that all ok. I am looking for good buy and good beginner boat - somewhat stable and can be fast/fun - All I've read points to the rhodes /oday day sailer 17 for ease of trailering and launching - Am I correct in choosing Oday 17 daysailer vs another? What about "stays"-

Bob,

On the Daysailer, you have three stainless wire cables that support the mast - the forestay and two sidestays (or shrouds). Very easy to replace. I replaced the 6 stays on my O'Day 25 last year, and it took about an hour with common tools. D&R Marine has your stays - around $225.

Well, I can recommend the DS II very highly... But perhaps I'm biased, having owned one for 18 years!
Be sure that while sailing you always keep the mainsheet in hand, use the supplied cam-cleat to hold the tension, but keep the sheet i nhand so that you can easily release it fro mthe cam-cleat if a gust of wind hits, that is one of the best defenses against capsizing a small centerboard boat. I have found the DS to be pretty stable, and fairly easy to sail. Uffa Fox designed and George O'Day marketed the DS as a great family boat and to not be intimidating to beginners, yet (like most O'DAYs) capable enough to keep more experienced sailors happy.
