I recently purchased a Hunter 31, early 80s model and was in the process of tuning the rigging when I noticed that the starboard lower shroud and the starboard lower diamond stay are in contact with each other, whereas there is a 1 1/2" gap between these on the port side. Has anyone ever encountered this and if so what is the cause and what is the solution? The lower spreader on the starboard side appears to be out of alignment with the upper spreader but there is no discernable twist in the mast and no visible difference at the spreader base.

Are the starboard and port shroud cables the same length? Maybe the PO replaced a shroud and got the length a few inches wrong???

You mean where the two lowers cross? That would indicate a twist in the mast and/or a spreader problem. My guess would be to loosen everything and tune from scratch. Bet it all falls in line.

Yardwork, thanks for bringing this up! I had forgotten that I wondered about this on my rig. Mine touch as well on both port and starboard side. When we rigged it I noticed it but could not see a way to avoid it. I have seen other rigs that have stay protectors (plastic sleeve) on their stays so it may not be uncommon. Maybe someone with more knowledge about the B&R rig can advise us.

Are the shrouds rigged through the spreader tip in the same order (front to back) on each side of the boat? Mine has a small gap (< 1/2") on one side and touches on the other where they cross.

The shrouds seem to be the same length. The mast is straight but does look twisted. The spreaders look ok and the shrouds cross the spreader tips in the same place.
