I have a qestion as to rigging the main sail on my hunter. The boat is new to me. The outhaul makes sense to me, but on either side there are 2 lines running through the boom towards the mast. These lines then run through a cam cleat at the end of the boom. Perhaps for reefing purposes? any help would be greatly appreciated.

correct

Those are your reefing lines. There should be a diagram in your owners manual showing how to rig them.

Hunter 30 Main Reefing

The two lines on the boom either side of the outhaul are 1st and 2nd reef lines. Reeve through the respective reef cringle and back to the boom. If you never need the 2nd reef, just leave the one position empty. H.W.

Tie a stopper knot

If you choose not to deploy the reef lines (to avoid clutter), be sure to (1) run a fire drill on how to get them up and running when under sail. You may discover that the clutter of the first reef is worth having it at the ready. (2) tie a stopper knot at the foot of the boom to prevent them from getting pulled out of the boom. It's a real pain to reload them if inadvertently pulled out. I can regail you for minutes on how to do it.
