i am looking for information. i just purchased a 1983 daysailer but am not sure how to rig it. perhaps the company that is still building these units, capecodshipbuilders, would have some info for me. being a novice to rigging, i am also a novice to care and feeding. this boat sat in a freshwater lake all summer and has crud all over the bottom. is that okay? is it best to get this off? i am beginning to think i should have kept my pontoon boat....

Sam, first don't get overwhelmed and give up. Sailing is so much better than a pontoon boat!!! There is a daysailors association that can help. As well, try signing onto the sailnet.com O'day email list. The guys (and gals) on this list are more than knowledgeable, as well as great people. I have learned so much on the list. Again, don't feel overwhelmed. Take it 1 step at a time. As for the slime on the bottom, remove it. Slime makes the boat slower and less rsponsive. Try power washing it first. The rest of the algae/slime can be removed with Mary Kate On and Off ( has ocacilic acid, so use rubber gloves becasue it irratates the skin)

rigging help

Hi Sam; Cape Cod Ship Builders probably would have a booklet with information, but you can find plenty free of charge on this site, and the Yahoo site for ODay owners. If you like to have a book in hand, your local library probably has books about sailboats with pitures and/or diagrams of rigging layouts. Time-Life Books did a nice series back in the '70's. That's just one of many. The rigging is pretty straight forward once you take a few minutes to look at some pictures and identify the various pieces. Just be sure you have all the bits & pieces for fastening to the deck before trying to sail. The slime on the hull is more a matter of appearance in your case. It's nice to keep the hull as clean as possible for pride of ownership. If you get serious about racing some day, then you'll want to keep the slim off for the slight improvement in speed you might gain. If you will be leaving the boat in saltwater instead of fresh, you'll want to use bottom paint to slow the growth, thereby improving appearance and performance, and decreasing cleanup time at the end of the season. Don't get discouraged. Get some books at the library, surf the net in the evenings, and find a few other local sailors who will be happy to help you get the hang of things. Sailing is a wonderful recreational activity.

Help with Daysailer

I just purchased a DS I in September and found a wealth of information at the following Web Site. If you can't find the info on the site someone will be glad to help you in the forums. I am a novice sailer, and I spent an afternoon with the boat in the driveway and had it rigged up in no time. Good Luck

rigging the DS

Sam, I am in the same boat!! I just bought a 1989 DS 3 covered with pond scum too and I am trying to figure it out. It cleaned up good with a Saturdays work. I need a new forestay (front)and found www.drmarine.com sells them pre-made for a fair price. Rudy the gent I spoke with there worked for ODay since the 70's. Also, info can be found at http://home.att.net/~oday/. Best of Luck, SCOTT
