I have a few questions about a rigging modification I'm considering for my 1983 Catalina 30. When I bought the boat it was rigged as I describe below.
I have a self furling jib. I also have a smaller
light air sail but, with the jib up, no halyard to raise it. The
thought of taking the jib off to fly a light air sail doesn't make
sense to me. So I started thinking of rigging a line for the light
air sail. I have attached a document with an
illustration in it so I can be clear in my explanation.
Currently the #1 pin hole in the mast head is open.
#2 pin hole is occupied with the pin that the Jib is attached to.
My thought is that I would move the jib to pin #1, put a new pin in #2
and attach a block to it. Then I could run a halyard through that for
the light air sail.
My questions are:
Does this seem like a good strategy or is there a better alternative?
By moving the jib to #1 am I negatively effecting structure, stability
or reducing performance in any way?
What size halyard should I use?
Do I need to make considerations for the block I put on and what
interference it may have on the jib when out?
Any other comments or suggestions that you have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
