I've been working on the boat but I'm having a hard time figuring everything out. I don't have a boom vang like the one in the illustration(user manual section). How do I keep downward pressure on the sail when under sail without a vang? Do I just tie a line from the sail to the mast step?Once I've slip the sail followers in the slot, what do I use to prevent the follower from going down past the slot opening? There is a hole at the top of the slot opening where I could slip a cutter pin. Is that what was used originally?I'm going back to the boat today I will try to take some pictures.Tx for your help

My O'day 22 had tang on the bottom of the boom, with another one on the bottom of the mast, with the vang in between.If there is a bail or tang on the boom to attatch to, you could use a line to the base of the mast. If the mast connection isn't in line with the gooseneck,though, you will need to keep adjusting the vang when you swing the boom.I tie mine off to the stantion base, but it's more messing around when adjustments are needed. You can put a cotter pin in the hole at the bottom of the slot, or purchase a stop with a knerled nut you can remove more easily Shoestring

Vang and Sail Follower Keeper standard

Get a vang. My 1973 Oday 23 has a boom vang as standard equipment. There is tang on the bottom of the boom that accepts a wire ball fitting, and I have an eye strap on the mast near the base. This fits a 4-part vang. I got a replacement unit at D&R Marine. There is a standard one fro the 23 in the catalog, or Rudy can make one up for you if you tell him what you want.On the mast sail follower slot, there is a thin aluminum pin that passes through the holes and acts as a retainer to keep followers from sliding out when the sail is down. The pin has a finger ring through one end, and a hole for a snap cotter pin through the other end to keep it from backing out.
