Has anyone rigged their ODay 222 main halyard back to the cockpit? I'm looking for advice, pros and cons, and pictures if possible.

Rigging Main Halyard Back to Cockpit?

Used mast organizer plate
I got an organizer plate from Rudy at D&R Marine (fit perfectly by the way) and then attached a block to the plate (http://www.drmarine.com/products.asp?cat=165). Attached is a picture shows it ready to go, but since I was sailing with two people, I just raised the main from the mast. It works fine. The only downside is that the main halyard just barely reaches the cockpit with the sail down. But it is easy to do, and safer when I'm solo.

I'd like to see your shots also. I've been playing with a deck layout on my '86 O'Day 222 to run the halyards, etc., back to the cockpit. I'm starting by replacing my original cast aluminum hinged mast step with a Stainless piece from Kenyon. Look here: http://www.rigrite.com/Spars/kenyon_spars/Kenyon_Parts/K-1374_assm.html
Also considering installing a traveler. Not sure I need one, but I can't leave anything alone...
I'll post sketches if I figure out a routing and equipment list that works.

I think that's the same one that I had installed on my mast by Rig-Rite back in 1993 including that utility plate. Just remember that you're going to gain about an inch or so when you go from that original mast step to this new Kenyon hinge. This is why I mounted my Kenyon hinge on a piece of Teak on my cabin. Unless you're going to replace your stays with new ones, you'll need to make up that space in order for your present stays to fit. Actually, I didn't realize it at the time but just having the mast pivot point higher on my cabin allowed my mast to lay a lot lower when it's pinned to the Tabernacle and ready to be raised with the aid of a Gin Pole. The traveler over the companionway step is a great idea too. If you can install a Johnson stay adjuster on your back stay, you'll never need to mess with any of your stays again. I would mount it under the back stay turnbuckle. This would allow you to remove your back stay from the mast. The only other thing needed is a press button quick pin for your fore stay. Never use a fast pin on anything. If you get a main sheet traveler, go for a good one like Harken or Garhauer with the ropes and sheaves. I bought a Nicro Fico and it's OK but I wish I'd have bought a Garhaurer. I'm no fan of halyards led back into the cockpit, myself. I like them just where they are, but that's just my preference.

The cunningham is next. Then maybe reef lines. I'll have to wait until I sail the boat first and see how things are working. Still a lot of work to do before launch.
