LOOKING FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO RIG JIB SHEETS FROM ROLLER FURLING JIB CLEW TO SWIVEL CAM CLEATS IN COCKPIT SO THE WINDWARD JIB SHEET DOES NOT FLAP INTO THE FORWARD COCKPIT (THUS ANNOYING MY WIFE AND KIDS). I HAVE AN ODAY DAYSAILER. WONDERING ABOUT TYPE OF HARDWARE (SIMPLE BULLSEYE, SPRING LOADED SWIVEL BLOCKS, ETC) AND PLACEMENT ON DECK OF ANY SUCH HARDWARE? MY SWIVEL CAM CLEATS ARE NOT ON TRACKS BUT I DO HAVE THE ORIGINAL 1982 JIB TRACKS (NEVER INSTALLED). THANKS FOR ANY IDEAS!

Re: Jib Sheets

Your windward jib sheet is what is called the "lazy" sheet. This means that it is doing nothing and therefore is ALWAYS uncleated. If it is not cleated, it has no tension on it and therefore will not flog. I would advise you to install the jib tracks. If you partially furl your jib, the jib car must be moved forward for the new sheeting angle. If you don't have tracks then you have no way to make the adjustment. Also, by moving the car back you can depower the top of the jib without having to furl it in gusty conditions.

two ideas

I have a 3/16" endless line running back to a small block at the top back edge of the cuddy. You can see it running back through fairleads in the attached picture, but the turning block is not very clear. There is also a clam cleat through which one part of the endless line runs. This line is somewhat snug and therefore always engages the furling gear. On my daysailer, I use the 'lazy sheet' to trim the jib clew just a wee bit inboard to an 18 degree position. If you look closly on the cuddy roof there is a straight black line (permanent black marker) demarking this optimum upwind sheeting angle. It acts like a barber hauler without adding extra rigging, and as long as the working jib sheet is snug and the jib block is at the back of the track, the lazy jib sheet does not increase the 'hook' on the leech of the sail.
