Rigging Issues

Ok I know this has been discussed a number of times but I'm having some problems with the rigging and I'm kinda lost. Yesterday we setup the mast for the first time. We did this well away from water so that we could figure out what our process was going to be and how to get everything moved around the boat. Anyway we didn't get much farther then raising the mast. We connected the mast raiseing system to the mast and got the stays all connected. We brought the mast up and everything seemed to be going well. Once I got the mast up, two very appearent problems surfaced. First the mast had a slight bend to starboard above the spreaders. Secondly the temporary stay used in the mast raising process was so tight that I couldn't get it off the starboard side. I tried loosing the trunbuckles on the starboard side and tightening up the ones on the port side to take out the bend in the mast but I couldn't seem to get it all out. Also no matter what I did I couldn't get that temporary stay to be loose. Any suggestions, or is it time to find a pro to get it rigged the first time so I know what I am doing. Thanks Jason

Bent mast?

Does the mast appear bent when sighting down its length before it is raised? If it's bent, when raised, above the spreader, then it should be a matter of adusting the uppers. Also, did you lenghten the temporary stays by spinning the pelican hook the proper direction? It may need to be a little slack at first to avoid being to tight once up. Mast

Ron, I don't think that the mast is bent. Sitting in the crutch it looks nice and straight. I can't see any bend. As for the pelican hook I'll try loosen it. The one on the port side was very loose when the mast was raised. I guess I'll just have to try to loosen the starboard side some more and tighten the port side. I'm just concerned about getting the mast setup incorrectly and damaging it or even worse have it come down when I'm out in the water. Jason

Temporary Stay

I have a H260 so I guess the H26 has something called a "temporary stay" that the H260 does not have?

Temporary Stay

Not sure. The temporary stay is only used while raising the mast and connects to the mast about 3 or 4 foot above the deck.

H26 vs H260

Te H26 uses temporary lines to prevent the mast falling to the side while being raised. They are disconnected when the mast is up. The H260 added rigid struts that hold the mast in position while raising and they stay in place while sailing. They provide added support to the mast, which allowed the mast wall thickness to be reduced in size. Fair winds, Tom
