Rigging Info

I just purchased a 1972 21' Aquarius sailboat. The mainsail did not come with the battens. Is it possible the previous owner sailed it like this? Also I am not familiar with the rigging of the traveller on this boat. Does anyone know where I might be able to find this information or better yet a picture?

Nuguy- I'm not familiar with your boat, but I know my boat will sail w/o battens- there was only one in my main when I bought the boat, and I lost that one the first time I took it out! I made a handfull out of wood, and am using them until I get some plastic ones. How well you can sail w/o battens probably depends on how much roach your sail has- the more roach, the more you need the battens. Perhaps another poster will be more familiar with your boat, and can tell you more. When you get battens, secure them in the pockets- I closed my pockets with sail tape to keep from firing battens downwind. -Paul

My former boat used simple wood battens - yardsticks will work if need be.

If you can't find a rigging pic - let me know -- I will try to draw a diagram for you.

Take a look at Pat Royce's little book Sailing Illustrated. He documents, sketches and explains the C22, Balboas and Aquarius boats in his section on rigging. When we had our C22 in early 80s this was our "boat bible" because it covered just abut everything and the book's diminutive size was just right for the size of our boating "library" aboard our fine yacht at that time.:):):)

The book is still in print and makes a fine investment or Xmas present for the skipper. I've always thought it one of the finest complete coverage books ever put together.

battens are inexpensive and readily available--why not try sailing it with and without and see what you yourself think?? the opinions of others do not always fit your own sailing style----go figger!! royces is awesome and a copy should be included with each sailboat on the sale thereof to new owner lol......
