I am looking for help with five questions regarding a recently purchased 1978 O'Day 14' Jevelin. It will be obvious from my questions that I am extremely new to sailing. However, my first (and only, so far)day out on the boat was fabulous! Next time, we hope to raise the jib. First, the individual I purchased the boat from could not tell me how the ropes for the main sail were supposed to be set up. Does anyone have any manuals, instructions, etc. for the main sail lines that they could forward? I have 2 pulleys in the rear of the boat, one in the middle of the boom and a black set of pulleys on the floor in the middle . . . no idea. I have seen many pictures of different rigging arrangements - some with the control fo rthe boom from the floor to only the mid-boom pulley and others that ran from floor, up through the pulley tp the rear of the boom and back down to a pulley that rides on a line tied between the two rear pulleys - ANY help would great appreciated. Second, can anyone tell me how the jib sail is rigged - I have 2 cleats on each side in the middle of the boat - one on the top and one just inside the side - do I use one, both? Third, my boom hangs fairly low in the back - so low everyone has to darn near lay down when the boom swings from side to side. I have seen many boats have a "wire" or rope from the top of the mast to the end of the boom to hold it up in the air some - should I have that boom support or should the sail support the boom - which is what it doeas now. Fourth, there is a rope tied to the bottom rear corner of the main sail - I assume this is to keep the sail pulled as far back in the boom groove as possible, but what does it tie to? Lastly, dooes anyone have any suggestions on a basic sailing book that will help us get started? Thank you for your assistance - any advice at all would be GREATLY appreciated.
