I have an Oday 22 which I am pretty hard on. I have reinforced the deck and cabin top, built a bridge deck in the cockpit in front of the companion way, added a second scupper and increased the balast by about 250 lbs. I feel that the rig is very weak. I think that the sheet metal screws holding the mast base are just waiting to get ripped out. Any ideas on how to reinforce this? Also looking for info on chainplates. Should I attach them to deck and hull, or will just deck be sufficient. Any other info on beefing up this little boat would be great. Thank you.

Rigging reinforcement

After a discussion with Rudy at D&R Marine, he said that I should have the chainplates fastened through the deck and also through the bulkheads on the port and stbd sides. Also make sure that the chainplates are 5/16" not the old 1/4" dia if your 22 is an older one.

How do you remove the chainplates?

I would like to put some sealant around my Oday 22's chainplates and inspect them for corrosion. I need to be sure they are not the older 1/4 inch parts, too. Does anyone know how to remove them? I tried to remove the two nuts per plate and the l-bracket from the teak bulkheads, but chainplates wouldn't budge. What am I missing?
