how do I rig a halyard on to my mast? The mast is set up for 2 halyards, jib & main only. I've recently had a A-symetrical spinaker given to me and I want to fly it but how to rig a halyard??? I have roller furling, masthead mounted.

External halyard

Catalina Direct sells a masthead spinnaker crane that fastens to the top of the mast using the sheave and forestay pins. Combine that with a spinnaker halyard block and you're good to go. You'll have to call them to see which pin arrangement will match your masthead.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. I didnot know the correct name and had no luck searching for it. I'v e-mailed Catalina direct. They don't list the C25 but maybe they have one that will work. Otherwise I'll build one. Thank you, Wayne

flying outside the triangle

With an assym, I assume you want to fly it outside the foretriangle so that necessitates mounting any block above the forestay. I used a stout eyestrap to which I attached a block and shackle, through which I rove a 5/16" line, added a snap shackle to attach the head of the assym to, then brought the halyard around a new cheek block at the base of the mast, and back to a new cleat at the back of the cabin bulkhead. At the stemhead, you will need to attach the tack of the assym to a point forward of the forestay. The big changes will be at the aft end of the cockpit where you will have to add turning blocks and cleats for the sheets. It may cost a couple of hundred $ to rig it, but the first day, when you have very little wind, and decide to fly your new kite, it will all be worth it. You will notice that you are sailing along at the same speed as if there was adequate wind for a jib. If on the other hand the assym is small enough to fly (and tack) within the foretriangle, then you can get away with using the jib halyard, although, like you I have a furler, and mounted my halyard block just under the masthead mounted forestay.

This is what the parts book shows

The C25 should have a mast head crane that has an extra hole in front of the headstay fitting to install a spinnaker halyard block. I assumed all the masthead cranes had the same setup but maybe the later years didn't have the holes. http://www.catalina-capri-25s.org/manbro/pictures/pc22.gif http://www.catalina-capri-25s.org/forum/

Too close to stay

Dan, the problem with the original hole is that the block ends up being too close to the headstay. It's that way on the C27, and the masthead geometry of similar sized Catalinas appears to be pretty much the same.

Once you've rigged spin, try this

Here’s an easy-to-make bowsprit, seats in the anchor locker. This will throw the spin ahead of the main, less blanketing. Tack line and 2 sheets permanently deployed for quick setup. (Note that the link here has 2 pages of pix and directions.) Typo correction: Eyelet should be 3/8 inch.
