tuning the rig
Racers use a loos gage which gives them a metered tension on stays. Unless your interested in serious racing you can pretty much tune your rigging by feel.; Start by getting the mast plum this means no rake, no foreward tilt no hooking or leaning to port or starboard .Once thats done you need to tune the rigging. Lets start fore and aft. Tighten the head stay until its taught. This means when your going to weather in a moderate breeze the head stay should not sag to the lee. Remember to avoid any foreward rake on the mast when doing this. This can best be accomplished by working on both the head and back stay simultaneously. Keep the mast plum get em both tight . Next come the port and starboard uppers and lowers. Start with the uppers get em tight so there is a not much play in them You dont want that mast flexing or moving around. You want the mast straight no hooking port or starboard And finally the lowers they should be tight too but not as tight as the uppers This is a beginners tune but should get you started. As you gather experience with your boat you will learn how to eliminate weather helm, get the boat to point higher AND LOTS OF OTHER STUFF TOO. It all comes witb
