This is my first year that my mast was down on my newly acquired 1990 Hunter 33.5. The mast has a lot of bend in it (I don't believe they call that rake). The marina yard is going to re-step it, but I want to check for myself that the tensioning is correct on the standing rigging. I have a Loos Gauge. What is the sequence of checking and tightening the rigging on this model boat? Thanks.

Let the yard do it.

They have to rig it to right it, so they're responsible for proper tension in the first place. That's SOP for any responsible yard. Then use the Loos Guage as a benchmark for future adjustment.

I'm in the school that says I want to know how to tune my own standing rigging. I think you have a B

I agree that the yard....

....should do it right, but I'm afraid that most of them don't even come close to getting it right. Let them step the mast, then you tune it properly. That way you'll know it's correct. I tune my rig myself. After 'learning the ropes' it's a pretty easy job. Getting it right is key to proper sail trim and boat speed.

....are NOT B&R rigs. They do not have diagonals, the spreaders are swept only 12 or 13 degrees not 30 or so like the B&R. Trying to tune these boats with a B&R tuning guide WILL NOT WORK.

Rigs evolve

Hello, As noted alongside, Hunter rigs have gone through significant evolution, from conventional masthead rigs to swept masthead, to swept fractional, to even more swept B&R, with backstay, to VERY swept, sans backstay. Your rig is likely early on the evolutionary scale. I address this matter in some detail elsewhere on this site, but the short form is that if you have no diamond stays, and if the rigging is continuous to deck, you don't have B&R. As for the sentiment that a proper tune is SOP for a good yard, well, I only wish it were so. Fair leads, Brion Toss
