Hi Carl, on a masthead rig the forestay and there for the headsail goes all the way to the top of the mast, with a fractional rig the forestay is attached below the top of the mast, so any headsail hanked onto it can only go a 'fraction' of the way to the top. waiting for spring!! Tom s/v GAIA
