Riding sail

I'd like to buy a riding sail and I have a couple of questions:

1. My boat has a split backstay; will the sail be effective if it is hanked onto on side of the backstay instead of on the centerline of the boat?

2. What square footage of sail do I need for a 31' boat?

Thanks.

Consider the Fin Delta from Banner Bay. Works with split back stay or in my case no back stay.

Also search the archives as there are many posts on this subject that will be helpful to you.

Sailrite has a kit. The sail is very easy to make and probably less expensive than one made by a loft. There is also a sizing guide. Made one a couple of years ago, took an afternoon. Good winter project.

Have a look at the YouTube at the link below which directly addresses your question. Also, you might wish to review the recent related discussion on another thread at SBO.

Jan 2007 Sail magazine had an article by Jess Gregory about making a riding sail. A graph to be a rule of thumb shows for a 31, you'd use a 21 sq ft. sail. I made one for my B323, and it seems to work decently. In short, it shows you deduct ten feet from the foot-length of your boat, and that's how many square feet you'd want the riding sail.
