Riding Out Hanna Aboard

[Bad Obsession]

Well, I had decided to riade Hanna out aboard my Catalina 30 at the dock to make sure things went okay. So far so good. The water is 6" from the top of the dock right now but the tide should be coming in. That being said, the wind is now out of the North West so that should push the water out of here.

THe winds haven't been as bad as I expected. I think a few times we had 40 knots sustained and a few really high gusts, but overall it has been 25-35 knots of air most of the day.

I plan to leave my boat storm prepped for the next few weeks just to be on the safe side with the way the Atlantic is looking right now.

Farther north on the bay, well 10 miles inland,

we have gotten about 4 inches of rain and are just now getting a strong breeze. We often get winter storms of this intensity. The temperature is about 80 degrees. All in all it hasn't been a bad day here.

Hope things go well for all of you up the East coast to my north.

My boat rode out the storm sitting on the trailer in my driveway- my worst problem is a boat full of leaves. We had about 3.5" of rain(according to my gauge) and some gusts of 40-50 mph(according to the TV) as the center of rotation passed very nearly right over us. Didn't even clean all of the dead limbs out of my trees, but I'm not going to complain.

Funny- I went sailing on the Pamlico River near Washington, NC on Wednesday. In the afternoon, the wind died so that I had to motor back to the ramp. Probably would not have had that problem yesterday or this morning.... Pretty calm and sunny here now.

Waiting

We are waiting to see what HANNA will do here in lONG ISLAND.
Was camping over in Riverhead and was told to leave today so
far just some rain but heavy rain and flooding expected over night.
I did go and add some extra lines on the boat and check everything,
my marina is well protected so not too worried for now.

The clouds are thinning and the sun is showing

through the clouds. The winds are starting to get stronger and more gusty. This morning was flat calm but now I estimate gusts to about 40.

No Problems Here

In Williamsburg. Everyone battened down the hatches. I turned the Dream Weaver around in her slip and pulled all the canvas. She looks really strange without the Dodger and Bimini with the Connector up. Added two additional bow lines to outside pilings and additional stern lines. Put out four bow lines to four different pilings, four stern lines to four pilings and two spring lines at midship to their dedicated pilings. Looks I'm expecting a Cat 5 blow to come in here. We got rain and mild winds. I get more wind from an late summer afternoon / evening thunderstorm. A semi-dead branch from an oak tree that was about the diameter of a hot dog and about the length of a base ball bat fell down in the drive way. Better safe than sorry. Tide was about 2 inches above normal.

No problems on the West River

I rode out the storm on the West River at Pirates Cove. Top wind speed was 35 kts. Interestingly, the storm's C-shape kept most of the worst weather around us, but not on us. I made a few adjustments to the lines when the wind moved around from east to north, but otherwise spent most of the time catching up on reading. Hopefully Ike won't be interested in following Hanna.

NOAA watchig my Boat

We can go on line any time and check the specific wind and tide conditions at Tolchester Marina on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake. Within the last hour or so the wind speed has been 29 knots gusting to 32 presently at 338 degrees and a tide about 2' above the normal low tide.

Suggest many could tie up the boats each week and sometimes save a trip down by logging on to:

I'm looking to sail her up to Worton Creek tomorrow in 10-12 knot northwesterlies.

In an earlier post I mentioned that the sun had broken

through the clouds and the winds had increased. It brought to mind the celestial navigation tem "the Sumner line" . When all else has failed it is good to know.

Will check tomorrow

Went down Friday afternoon and took off all the canvas, doubled the lines, tied the boom off to one side, pulled the dinghy and motor. Returned home to PA for the storm but will head down Sunday to see how things went. The dingy is staying home unless we're heading out for a weekend with the dog. The canvas is going back on for now.

A number of people on our dock at Skipjack on the Sassafras decided to ride out the storm on board. Having done so with steady winds in the 25-30+ range thought better of it and stayed away. Not our idea of a fun day. Hope all made out well.

Rode it out

Went to the boat Friday afternoon and prepared the boat, double the lines and tied everything down. Had a few bands of rain/wind come through the night but the actual storm didn't start until around 8am Sat morning. The highest wind I recorded was 32kts. It rain and the wind blew mostly from the east until about 3:00 when everything started to calm down with the wind switching to the NW. Low tide was at 1:30p but you wouldn't know it. Water was right up to the bottom of the dock. Hopefully with the wind out the NW the water will recede since high tide is at 8:00p Sat. I went home for the night and will be returning on Sunday to go sailing.

with mine, she weathered the storm nicely. Prior to, I took the precaution of adding extra lines and removed all the canvas and put extra lashing on the sails (furling).

My dock neighbor replaced he lines in preperation

for Hanna. On Friday this was brand new braided dock line. The picture is from noon today.

Went to my boat today...

...and undid all the storm prep I had done on Thurs. It appeared that no damage at all to boats and docks at Herrington. Nice day, so I went for a sail in a nice little breeze. You would not know that a TS had just passed thru the area. Calm seas and no floating debria at all.

Tried to hail Jim Seamans aboard "Java" but probably too far away. Heard about a boat capsizing on the Magothy. No details.

Ross: I just hate chocks. They are are reall cause of line failure/chafe. I would not have them on my boat.

FYI, I would not recommend staying aboard one's boat at a marina in a storm. If at sea, you have no choice. If an owner had stayed aboard when Isabel hit Herrington in 2003, you would not be able to get off your boat for quite a while after the storm had passed as the water was much higher than whatever was left of the docks. Be careful out there folks....

Debris? Grass & Jelly Fish!

Well, I found absolutely no damage from Hanna, so I sailed up to Worton Creek this afternoon and noticed an increasing amount of floating grass intertwined with multiple 6" diameter Jelly Fish. I've never seen that before this far north in thr bay. Lots of half submerged twigs and small diameter sticks, but no logs as experienced when the Dam at the Susquehanna opens it's flood gates. Guesss we lucked out on this one in the upper Bay.

Chocks and chafe are why I posted the picture.

Applying service to those lines now is the only way to stop the chafe if she is going to continue to use the chocks.
