Ride out the storm aboard, or not?

So an open question for everyone to ponder. Earl looks like it might hit the east coast but really any storm...ride it out aboard or get off and hope for the best?

It seems to me storm based problems come in two varieties. The slow creeping problems you can only prevent or fix by being there and the sudden oMG type that need immediate attention. Both are impossible to deal with if you aren't there.

Ftr- we live on a helix mooring on the Potomac, with a real long (7 miles or so) feth of open water between us and weather coming from the south east.I have ordered oversized pennants, would strip canvas and lash down boom, but why not ride out a storm in sight of land?

Blaze away.....

After preparing the boat, i.e. removing all canvas, closing all seacocks and possibly removing sails, what else can you do? If other boats start drifting toward your boat do you think you can stop them in very strong winds? I am in a slip, a mooring would be different, so I would just add some extra lines and hope for the best.

For Huricane Earl, I put 20 lines, with two anchore in a slip, in BVI marina. 2 line forward, 2 lines stern, 4 lines in each side starboard and port and a lot of fences. of course take all canvas. You can use the dinghy as a fender a stern, just put it in the water a secure it a stern between the jetty and the boat.
