I have a Groco HF head in an ODay 272 that has not been operated in some time (2+ yrs). Opening the intake thruhull and gently operating the pump T-handle yields squeaky sounds but no water into the bowl. The valve handle is in the vertical position. I've considered taking the hose, from the top of the pump to the back of the bowl, loose at the bowl, and try to prime the pump. The squeaks indicate to me that seals, etc. haven't seen water lately. Is this a reasonable attempt at getting the head up and running again or have I engaged in wishful thinking?

You have nothing to lose by pouring a little mineral oil (baby oil IS mineral oil) into the bowl and pumping it through. If all it needs is lubrication, that should start it working again. If not, whether to rebuild or replace the toilet depends on the age of the toilet. It's a low-end inexpensive toilet anyway...the kit costs about $50...and there's no guarantee that rebuilding it will fix the problem if a part has failed that isn't in the kit. How old IS it? Btw...have you tried it with wet/dry lever in both positions? Wet and dry should be labeled.

I'll give a shot. Peggy, your course of action sounds reasonable. I've tried pumping in both wet and dry positions; no joy. I suppose this head came with the boat (87 model) so it may have put it's better days well behind. Is the PHII your replacement of choice? (Or, are endorsements a no-no?) By the way, I have your book and it's a great work. You're truly "The Queen of Clean Water" Thanks!

Yep...the PH II would be my choice
Or the PCH, which is the same pump but on a compact base to fit in tighter spaces. Btw, Jack...I'm gonna be in St. Pete next week on a job...coming in Weds, going home Tues 15th. Job will done by Fri...just gonna relax and try to soak up a little sun the rest of the time. And would love put faces with any of the Tampa Bay area folks here.
