Revisiting leaking fuel tank

I previously posted about a leaking fuel tank on a 1996 Catalina 30. After removing the tank I found that the forward portion of the tank was resting on four stainless bolts with nuts attached. I believe this is the connection for the prop shaft support. The aluminum tank was destroyed by electrolysis by contacting this stainless. This is the original tank so either something is missing that would prevent this contact or this is a major manufacturing defect that all owners need to be aware of. See attached pictures of the bottom of the fuel tank.

Greg, thanks for posting this. Sounds like I should pop my tank to check clearance before launching this sprint.

No I have not contacted Catalina Yachts. I think I should though. Maybe a part that protects the tank was mistakenly omitted.

i really don't mean to be mean spirited but cannot understand the what seems to be prevelant reluctance among of so many to contact catalina yachts with problems. they've always helped me, from frank butler down.

I just contacted Catalina Yachts with the problem and the pictures of the tank damage. I will let you know what happens.

Greg I just replaced mine a couple months ago but don't recall any metal showing, nuts or otherwise, just glass. Was your strut replaced maybe?

My fuel tank developed a leak. Turned out it was a defective weld which I had repaired at an aluminum fabrication shop. I called Frank Butler and we discussed the possibility of Catalina helping defray my costs, but he explained that the boat was two years old, and their warranty was only for one year. Oh, well, at least he answers the phone.

it didn't save me money either but frank butler once went bat for me with a reluctant subcontractor and i was delighted he answered his phone. a simple repair that would have been a real problem without a schematic stymied by a manufacturer who couldn't be bothered. a real plus to have the boat maker still in business and cooperative.

It all looks original under the tank. There are four bolts with locking nuts on them. They are just aft of the water heater. I will take a picture the next time I am at the boat. I contacted Catalina Yachts and Lisa told me Gerry Douglas will be calling me.

Here are some pictures of the bolts under the fuel tank that caused electrolysis that ultimately destroyed my tank. I found a XLPE tank at Moeller Marine that is 16 gallons and fits well in the space. Still waiting to hear from Catalina Yachts.

Greg - thanks for the pictures. I think it would be prudent for me to peek under my tank and double check for those nuts. I just don't remember seeing them.
