Revisiting an old archives topic... rubrail stain cleanup. In 1999 there was a long threat on all types of cleaners to use on rubrail brown stains. Does anyone know if a definitive answer was ever given from Hunter on recommended maintenance? Or product to use? Obvioulsy I have the dreaded brown. Thanks.

Cleaner

I never asked the question of Hunter, but there was a posting by a guy who said his company makes the rails for Hunter and others. He said the rails were PVC. I started using PVC patio furnature cleaner on ours and they look great. I only need to clean them about 3 times a year. I started checking with the folks who do maintenance on the docks, and those that would tell me what they were using were aslso using PVC cleaner..

Can't find the "long thread in 1999"

Can you? I wonder how we can, because I am looking for an answer, too.

The most effective I have found ..................

........ is a household liquid cleaner called Vim. Contains a very mild abrasive and leaves the rub rails spotless. Regards, s/v Island Hunter

MEK

If all else fails try MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone). It is sold as a cleaner for the adhesive used to glue PVC plumbing in DIY shops. Caution, it is a SOLVENT for the PVC so it just needs a quick wipe to bring back the as new colour. Use plenty of clean rag Did mine yesterday. Regards,

Island girl

I used Island Girl Sea Glow on the rub rail, rubbing with 0000 non metalic wool. It took two hours and looks as good as new.

Island Girls - a new one on me

I thought just about every product was tried in the archive. This is a new one. I will look into it. Also, it would be interesting to see how long it lasts. I had mine great also but the brown stais came back in under a week. I think what some others don't understand is that this is a problem with the rub rail product, not typical dirt. Previous threads blammed it on UV, could be true.
