While you hold the helm most of the time, do you reverse roles with your significant other when it's time to dock the boat? Is the switch something you do regularly, or just in certain conditions? Could your SO dock if he/she had to? Were the new roles hard to learn, or was it easier than you suspected? Share your partner swapping stories here, then vote in this week's Quick Quiz at the bottom of the home page.

Role Reversal

Last year my wife took a beginner sailing class at one of the local collages. She learned that she knew a lot more about sailing and boat handleing than she realized. The initial purpose of taking the course was in case something happened and it would be up to her to get the boat back to safety single handed. This is one area that everyone should take a closer look at if you sail with some on a regular basis, we did and it has made for more enjoyable time sailing and a better sailing partner. EQUAL RIGHTS

We definitely agree that both the Captain and first mate should be able to dock the boat. In case of an injury or medical emergency. Simply because if you enjoy boating you should be responsible enough to know how to operate the boat under all conditions and that includes changing sails, trimming sails, reefing and anchoring. We would like to share something we observed from another couple. We now use head phones for anchoring, especially in strong wind and/or at night. There is no misunderstanding about directions or concerns nor misinterpretations of hand signals. We have also made this page a favorite and look forward to more helpful hints.
