Not so long as the engine isn't running.

Then it will have an adverse effect on your speed.

Absolutely

Jerry there was a heated debate on this one month prior on a pro net with experts (real not from here) debating this very subject. The consensus finally came down to this: 1) it is always better for the yacht to lock it off in reverse, bearing, strut et al. 2) locking it off will be a drag on your sailing speed, 30% yes in would, 60% no it does not, in fact most concluded that by letting the prop spin it slows the vessel. 3) racing folks do not care if they have to haul for a bearing replacement or not, most of these have 'feathering' props, max, or folders, and indeed lock em in reverse. Some yachts run generaters from the shaft while sailing, it will wear the transmission and strut bearing too. Ross is also right, funny the subject did not come up on the net; running the engine whilst in reverse as ya never know...;-)
